PITFALLS: HOW TO FAIL AS A LEADER, PART THREE
Many a leader have been caught in the traps of flawed character in their leadership. Many are highly competent, skill-wise. Yet, they forget that their skills will take them as far as their character will allow them to sustain pressure.
3. Lack of Empathy:
Your ability to understand and share the feelings of others, empathy basically, is an essential trait for you. And you team! When you lack empathy , you often come across as detached or unsupportive, leading to a host of problems within your teams and organization.
Consequences of Lack of Empathy:
Low Morale: When team members feel that you don't understand or care about their concerns, teammates’ morale can plummet, affecting overall performance and job satisfaction. That is a downward spiral you want to stay away from.
Decreased Cohesion: Empathy fosters a sense of unity and belonging within teams, it has such a beautiful effect on people. Yet, when you lack some, it can lead to fragmentation and hinder effective collaboration.
Impaired Decision-Making: Leaders who lack empathy may make decisions that disregard the emotional well-being of their team members, potentially leading to poor choices and unintended consequences. Have you ever been there?!
4. Ego-Centric Leadership:
Leaders who prioritize their personal ego and ambitions above the well-being of their team or organization create a toxic work environment. You become an ego-centric leader when you do that. This WILL result in resentment, a lack of trust, and decreased morale among team members.
Consequences of Ego-Centric Leadership:
Distrust: Team members may view you as self-serving and untrustworthy, eroding the foundation of a healthy working relationship.
Resistance: When you consistently prioritize your own interests, team members may resist your directives, making it challenging to achieve organizational goals.
Low Morale: Ego-centric leaders often focus on their own accomplishments, neglecting to recognize and appreciate the contributions of their team. This usually lead to low morale and reduced productivity.
5. Lack of Accountability:
Accountability is essential to effective leadership. When you avoid taking responsibility for your mistakes or the consequences of your decisions, you directly undermine your credibility and create a culture of blame within your teams.
Consequences of Lack of Accountability:
Credibility Erosion: Refusing to acknowledge your mistakes or misjudgments will lead to a loss of credibility in the eyes of your team members, coworkers and superiors.
Culture of Blame: A lack of accountability can foster a culture where individuals deflect responsibility, hindering growth, and innovation within the organization. You’ll start hearing “It’s not my fault”, “That was XYZ’ responsibility” and other similar excuses.
Stagnation: Without accountability, you will resist the needed or crucial change, worse, you may avoid necessary course corrections, leading to organizational stagnation.
Leadership success is intricately linked to your character. Leaders who lack empathy, exhibit ego-centric tendencies, or avoid accountability are at risk of encountering serious challenges in their leadership journeys. However, awareness of these character pitfalls is the first step toward growth and improvement.
